In 1849 the first baseball team was wearing uniforms. The New York Knickerbockers were wearing blue pants made of wool and straw hats with white flannel shirts.
Wearing uniforms got out quick, in 1900 every team in the Major League Baseball wore a uniform.
The Detroit Wolverines, Washington Nationals, and the Brooklyn Bridgerooms of the National League and American Association were the first clubs to use a pattern on their uniforms. Because of this you can recognize different position players. In the 19th century they wore home and away uniforms, often home uniforms were white and away uniforms were grey or dark blue. The Brooklyn Superbas where one of the first ones that used this concept in 1907.
Stockings and pants
The colour of a teams stockings/high socks was used to distinguish your team since the 1860s. This was inspired by the Cincinnati Red Stockings. In the 1990s came along new styles of pants named close-trimmed pants. This made it possible for players to wear pants that ran clear to the shoe tops. Instead of the traditional knee-breeches style which has been used for generations. The original Stirrups socks however aren’t usually worn anymore, sometimes in throwback uniforms. In the 21st century players now wear either knee-high socks or pants, or they ware loose-fitting pants called pro-flare.
