catcher helmet catcher mask buying guide

When you want to buy new catcher head gear it's important to know all about it. Because what's more important than protecting your head?

A catcher is seen as the leader on the field, because of the total overview the catcher has on the field. So that’s why the catcher position needs the best of the best equipment. In this buying guide you'll get to know the important differences and what to know before buying head gear.

Different Catcher's Masks

A mask should offer two main features, easy removal and protection. A mask is designed to protect your face from wild pitches and foul balls, but it should also be easy to remove to go after fly balls.

There are two different styles of catcher's masks. The first one is the traditional two-piece style mask. This mask sits on top of the batting helmet, which makes it easier for the catcher to remove the mask when catching a fly ball and making fast plays at the home plate. A two-piece mask has padding that covers the forehead and jaw of the catchers, it doesn't offer as much protection as the other option, the catcher helmet.

The other option is the catcher helmet, this one looks like a hockey goalie's helmet and it offers more protection than the two-piece mask. That's why the hockey style mask has grown in popularity over the last couple of years. The disadvantage of this mask is that it isn't easy to get rid off and can hinder your vision when going for a fly ball. Most youth leagues require to use this style of mask during play because of the extra protection. So always check your local leagues rules before buying a catcher helmet.

Most of the manufactures create mask for two target groups, youth and adult. The reason behind this is because these masks are easy to fit to your head. There are adjustable straps on the mask which you can strap at the back to your personal preference. Most of the time the youth masks are designed for young players under the age of 12, and the adult masks for players 13 and older. But ofcourse it is possible that a young mask fits better, always go for the option that is most suitable and comfortable for you.

Throat Protectors

A good addition to your head gear would be a throat protector. The throat isn't protected by a standard helmet or mask so a protector would solve this issue. The throat is very vulnerable for high-speed impact, a ball or bat piece hitting that area could cause serious injury. Many youth leagues even require players to wear a throat guard as part of the catcher equipment. It adds that extra layer of safety, giving catchers and coaches more confidence behind the plate.

When buying a throat protector you should check for a couple of things first. A guard must allign properly under the mask so the guard covers the throat and it doesn't interfere with movement or vision. It should be mounted securely but also allow some movement so it doesn't restrict your head motion during play. Keep in mind that most of these throat guards are a one-sized item.
