How to Choose the Right baseball Catcher’s Glove: Your Quick Guide

Everything You Need to Know Before Buying

Choosing a catcher’s mitt is different from picking any other baseball glove. Catchers have unique responsibilities—framing pitches, blocking balls in the dirt, managing base-stealers, and calling the game—all of which demand a mitt that offers maximum protection, control, and durability.

Unlike standard gloves, a catcher’s mitt has no separate finger slots and features extra padding and a deeper pocket to handle high-velocity pitches. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, including mitt sizing, materials, webbing, and fit, so you can confidently choose a mitt that matches your playing style and level.

Best catcher's mitt features:

  • Webbing

Most catcher’s mitts feature a closed web design. This provides added support and durability when receiving high-speed pitches. Unlike open web gloves, closed webbing offers more structure, which is essential given the mitt’s larger size and heavy use behind the plate.

  • Back Style

Catcher’s mitts come with two types of backs:

  • Closed back: Offers better wrist support and protection—ideal for players seeking stability and control.
  • Open back: Provides more wrist mobility and ventilation.

Some mitts also include extra features like an external finger slot for added grip or an adjustable wrist guard for customized comfort and security.

  • Padding

Padding is a critical component of a catcher’s mitt.

  • More padding = better hand protection, especially against fast pitches.
  • However, more padding can reduce the size of the pocket. To compensate, many players opt for a mitt that is an inch larger to maintain a wide enough catching area while enjoying maximum protection.

  • Leather Types

Catcher’s mitts are available in several types of leather, each offering different durability and price points:

  • Synthetic or pigskin leather: Softer, more affordable, and easier to break in—perfect for youth or beginner players.
  • Steerhide or full-grain leather: Premium-grade, highly durable, and built to last multiple seasons. These require significant break-in time but are the top choice for serious and pro-level players.

  • Sizing Guide

Catcher’s mitts are measured by circumference, not length. This explains the larger size numbers compared to standard gloves.

  • Ages 12 and under: 31" to 32" (inches)
  • Ages 13 and up: 32.5" to 34" (inches)

Choosing the right size depends on your playing style:

  • Larger mitts = bigger pocket, easier catches, less precision required.
  • Smaller mitts = faster transfers, improved ball control, and better agility training.

Some models come with custom fit options, such as adjustable straps or lacing systems, allowing you to fine-tune comfort and performance.

Breaking In Your Catcher’s Mitt

Once you’ve found the right catcher’s mitt, it’s essential to break it in properly to shape the pocket and webbing to your hand and playing style. The type of leather used plays the biggest role in how quickly and easily this process goes.

Break-In Time by Leather Type

  • Pigskin or synthetic leather: These softer materials break in quickly—often within just a few hours of play. They’re ideal for beginners, youth players, or anyone who needs a game-ready glove fast. However, they tend to wear out sooner than premium leathers.
  • Steerhide leather: Durable and high-quality, steerhide takes 2–3 months of consistent light practice to break in fully. It’s the top choice for serious players or those in advanced leagues. Many pros begin breaking in a new mitt gradually while still using their current one in games.

⚠️Tip: Many modern gloves come partially or fully factory-broken-in, meaning less work is required on your end. Check the manufacturer’s break-in percentage—some are ready for play out of the box.

When you’re short in time and have a game in a couple of days, go for a pigskin leather glove. When there is more time, or when you’re playing in a more advanced league, a stronger leather will be worth the price.

Glove Accessories & Care

To extend the life of your mitt and make the break-in process easier, consider using the following glove care accessories:

  • Glove break-in kits – Includes oils, conditioners, and tools like mallets to help soften and shape the leather.
  • Glove conditioner – Keeps the leather supple, prevents cracking, and enhances long-term durability.
  • Wraps and forming bands – Help form the pocket and maintain glove shape during storage.

Proper break-in and maintenance can add seasons of performance to your mitt and give you a better feel behind the plate.

Catcher’s Accessories – Must-Haves Beyond the Glove

  • Thumb Guard: Protects your thumb from hard impacts and overuse when catching fast pitches. Often worn inside the catcher’s mitt for extra support.
  • (padded) Inner Glove: A thin glove worn under the catcher’s mitt to prevent blisters and reduce hand pain. Increases comfort during long games or practice sessions.
  • Wrist Guard: Provides extra protection for the wrist from foul balls or sudden impacts. Can be worn under the jersey or gear.
