How to Clean and Store Shoulder Pads Like a Pro

Keeping your shoulder pads in top condition is simple, you just need the right routine.

Riddell spx shoulderpads keeping clean

Shoulder pads take a beating every single practice and game. Sweat, dirt, and impact build up over time. If you don’t take care of them properly, they can start to smell, lose freshness, and wear down faster.

But it’s not just about odor. Poorly maintained pads can trap bacteria, feel uncomfortable during play, and even lose part of their protective performance. Many athletes overlook this simply because they don’t have a clear routine or think it takes too much time.

The reality is that keeping your shoulder pads clean and well-stored is quick and easy once you know what to do. With just a few basic steps, you can improve hygiene, extend the lifespan of your gear, and make sure your equipment feels fresh and ready every time you put it on

What you need

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Mild soap
  • Water
  • A soft cloth or sponge
  • Disinfectant spray
  • White vinegar
  • A well-ventilated place to dry the pads
elements needed to clean shoulder pads

Step-by-step: How to clean your Shoulder Pads

Step 1: Wipe them down after use

After every practice or game, avoid throwing your shoulder pads straight into your sports bag. Take a few minutes to wipe them down with a damp cloth.

Clean the outer shell first, then gently wipe the inside padding where most sweat collects. This helps prevent dirt, moisture, and bacteria from building up.

Step 2: Clean them properly once a week

For a deeper clean, mix a small amount of mild soap with water. Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the full surface of the pads, including the straps and inner lining.

Focus especially on the areas that touch your body directly, as these hold the most sweat and odor. After cleaning, wipe away any soap residue with a clean damp cloth.

Step 3: Freshen them up

If your pads still smell, use a simple mix of water and white vinegar. Lightly spray the inside of the pads to help reduce odor.

Do not soak the pads. A light spray is enough to freshen them without leaving too much moisture behind.

Step 4: Let them dry completely

Drying is one of the most important steps. If moisture stays trapped inside the pads, bacteria can grow and cause bad smells.

Always let your shoulder pads air dry in a well-ventilated space. Hanging them up is best because it allows air to move through the padding.

Avoid direct heat, such as radiators or dryers, because this can damage the materials.

Step 5: Store them the right way

Once your pads are fully dry, store them in an open and dry place. Do not leave them in a closed sports bag overnight, as this traps moisture and odor.

Hanging them up between sessions helps them keep their shape and stay fresh for longer.

Final tip

Taking care of your shoulder pads only takes a few minutes, but consistency makes the difference. A quick wipe after every use and a proper clean once a week will help your gear last longer and perform better throughout the season.

It also helps to build this into your routine. Clean your pads at the same time you unpack your bag or prepare for your next training. That way, it becomes a habit rather than something you forget.

Regular maintenance not only keeps your gear smelling fresh, but also helps you spot small issues early, like loose straps or worn padding. Fixing these early can prevent bigger problems later on.

Look after your equipment, and it will keep protecting you when it matters most.

Breaking In Your Composite Bat
Baseball/Softball Breaking In Your Composite Bat
When you buy a wood bat or aluminum alloy bat, they’re usually ready to use right away — “hot out of the wrapper.” But composite bats are different. These high-performance bats need a break-in period to unlock their full potential. Why? Because composite bats are made of carbon fiber materials that perform better after they’ve been compressed by multiple hits. Over time, these materials create more “pop” and a stronger trampoline effect — helping the ball fly off the bat faster. Without proper break-in, your new bat might feel stiff, underpowered, or even be at risk of damage. With it, you’ll get better performance and a longer lifespan from your bat.
Breaking in and Prepping a New Football: From Box to Field
American Football Breaking in and Prepping a New Football: From Box to Field
In the world of American football, every detail matters—from the playbook to the gear. One of the most important pieces of equipment is the football itself. While it might seem ready to use straight from the box, prepping a football is a key step that can improve performance and extend the ball's life. Whether you’re a coach, player, or equipment manager, understanding how to break in and condition a football is essential.
Lacing your Glove in 5 Simple Steps
Baseball/Softball Lacing your Glove in 5 Simple Steps
A worn or broken lace doesn’t mean your glove is finished. Relacing a baseball or softball glove might seem tricky at first, but with the right tools and a little patience, anyone can do it—whether you're a player, parent, or coach. Over time, laces stretch, tear, or wear down, which can affect your glove’s shape, performance, and safety. Instead of buying a new glove, relacing it helps restore its structure and extend its lifespan. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to relace your glove, what tools you’ll need, and how to bring your favorite glove back to game-ready condition.
Break In Your Glove The Right Way
Baseball/Softball Break In Your Glove The Right Way
Did you just buy a new baseball or softball glove and find it stiff and hard to use? That’s completely normal — especially with high-quality gloves. It means it’s time to break in your glove the right way. A proper break-in will make your glove more flexible, create a custom pocket shape, and help you get the most out of your gear on the field.
