Are you switching positions or just in need of a new facemask that suits your style of play? Choosing the right football facemask is more than just about looks—it's a key part of your protection and performance on the field. This guide will help you understand what to look for when selecting the right facemask for your position.

When buying a facemask, the most important thing is to ensure that it fits your football helmet properly. Different helmet brands and models often require specific facemask types, so always double-check compatibility before buying. Your facemask is the only thing standing between your face and the action on the field. It’s a crucial piece of equipment made to shield you from contact, collisions, and the intensity of the game.

Does More Bars Mean More Protection?

Generally, yes—more bars = more coverage, especially for the mouth, jaw, and nose areas. However more bars can reduce visibility, which can be a disadvantage for certain players. That’s why your position should guide your choice of facemask style and structure.

Which Facemask Fits My Helmet?

Facemasks are helmet-specific. That means not every facemask fits every helmet. Most major brands (like Riddell, Rawlings or Light) design their facemasks to fit only their own models.

Examples:

  • Riddell SpeedFlex facemasks only fit SpeedFlex helmets.
  • Riddell Victor facemasks do not fit SpeedFlex or Axiom models.
  • Light facemasks are made for Apache, Lightning, and LS2 helmet series.

Note: Always check the product description for helmet compatibility before buying.

What is the difference between a skill-position facemask and a lineman facemask?

A lineman facemask is typically a Full Cage design with more horizontal and vertical bars to offer maximum protection during close-contact play. A skilled-position facemask is usually an Open Cage, with fewer bars to provide better visibility, lighter weight, and improved field awareness.

Facemask Types

The structure of your facemask plays a key role in how well it protects you—and how well you see the field. Depending on your position and style of play, you’ll want either a full cage or an open cage facemask. Ultimately, choosing a facemask for your position comes down to personal preference and comfort.

Materials & Price Differences

  • Carbon Steel – The most common and budget-friendly option; strong and highly durable.
  • Stainless Steel – Lighter than carbon steel and resistant to rust; offers improved visibility and comfort at a slightly higher price point.
  • Titanium Lightweight Tubular Steel – Ultra-light, extremely strong, and built for top-level performance; a premium choice often used by elite players.

How Do I Mount a New Facemask?

Attaching a facemask depends on the helmet type:

  • Standard snap-on models: Use screws and T-nuts to attach the facemask at the temple and jaw points.
  • Quick-release systems (like Riddell SpeedFlex): Use built-in release clips—no tools needed.
  • Some models may require additional hardware kits, which are often sold separately.

Always follow your helmet brand’s mounting instructions or ask your coach/equipment manager for help.

Adding a Football Visor

Football visors can be clipped onto your facemask to enhance protection and performance. While not required by most leagues, they’re increasingly popular among both youth and pro players.

Visors are made from durable polycarbonate and usually include anti-fog coatings to keep your vision clear in all conditions. Tinted visors can help reduce glare from the sun and make it harder for opponents to read your eyes—but always check with your coach or league, as tinted visors are often not allowed in official games.
