Baseball and Softball Bat certificate Buying Guide

As the bat certifications continue to change it is important to know the differences between the certifications and which one you need on the plate. First off all you should check with your coach or league to make sure what bat certifications are required to avoid purchasing a bat you cannot use.

What does BPF mean?

Bat Performance Factor (BPF) is simply the increase in the liveliness of a ball hitting a bat compared to throwing a ball against a solid wall. For example a 20% faster rebound = a BPF of 1.20. The major baseball and softball organizations have adopted the BPF standard to determine whether a bat is legal for play.

Baseball Bat Certifications

BBCOR Certified Bats
BBCOR (0.50 BPF)

BBCOR stands for Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution, a performance standard used to regulate adult baseball bats for high school and college play. The 0.50 BPF (Bat Performance Factor) rating measures how much energy is transferred from the bat to the ball, essentially how “lively” the bat is. A BBCOR-certified bat must have a BPF of 0.50 or lower, meaning it performs similarly to a traditional wood bat in terms of trampoline effect and exit velocity. This certification ensures fair competition, player safety, and consistent performance across different bat materials.

BBCOR bats are typically:

  • Barrel Diameter: 2⅝ inches
  • Lenght-to-Weight: Drop 3

BBCOR Bats are approved by all European Leagues, such as KNBSB, DBV,  and the Czech Baseball Extraliga

USA Baseball Certified Bats
USA Baseball (Little League)

The USA Baseball bat certification, often shown with the “USA Baseball” logo, is the official performance standard for youth baseball bats in the United States. It was introduced in 2018 to create a uniform bat standard for youth leagues.

Bats with the USA Baseball stamp are designed to perform more like traditional wood bats, reducing the trampoline effect for greater safety and fairness among young players.

USA Baseball stamp bats are typically:

  • Barrel Diameter: 2⅝ inches
  • No specific drop weight limit
  • Aluminum or composite construction allowed
USA Baseball Bats are required by the Little League and most European Youth Championship Competitions.
USSSA Baseball Certified Bats
USSSA Baseball

The USSSA Baseball bat certification is a performance standard used for youth travel baseball leagues governed by the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA). It allows for higher bat performance compared to USA Baseball-certified bats.

USSSA bats are tested to a 1.15 BPF (Bat Performance Factor) standard, meaning they produce more trampoline effect and greater ball exit speed. This makes them popular among competitive and travel-level players.

Key features for USSSA Baseball bats:

  • 1.15 BPF stamp (older models) or USSSA Baseball stamp (new standard from 2021 onward)
  • 2¾-inch barrel diameter allowed
  • Typically lighter “drop weights” (like -5, -8, -10)
USSSA bats are approved only in leagues that specifically recognize the USSSA bat standard.
Ink Dot Certified Bats

Ink Dot Certification

The Ink Dot Certification is a quality standard used to verify the grain straightness of maple and birch wood bats. It was introduced by Major League Baseball (MLB) to ensure that wood bats meet safety and performance requirements.

During testing, a small drop of ink is applied to the bat’s handle. The ink spreads along the grain lines, making it easy to measure their straightness. A bat passes the test if the grain deviation is 3 degrees or less, indicating the wood is strong, durable, and less likely to break dangerously.

Key features for Ink Dot wooden bats:

  • Ensures structural integrity and player safety
  • The ink dot is usually located on the handle near the logo

Ink Dot wood bats are required in American play, check your leagues regulation if your wooden bat is legal to use.

Fastpitch Softball Bat Certifications

WBSC Certified Bats
USA (ASA), NSA, and USSSA Fastpitch Bat Certifications

In fastpitch softball, different leagues and organizations use their own bat performance standards to ensure safety, fairness, and consistent play. The three main certifications are USA (ASA), NSA, and USSSA.

USA (ASA):

  • Meet the 98 mph batted-ball speed standard, which limits trampoline effect.
  • Used in most amateur and recreational leagues, including high school and college levels.

NSA:

  • Follow a 125 mph exit speed limit.
  • Must display the official NSA stamp on the barrel.
  • Commonly used in adult and tournament-level fastpitch leagues.

USSSA:

  • Tested to a 1.20 BPF (Bat Performance Factor) standard for fastpitch.
  • Popular in competitive travel and club-level fastpitch tournaments.

WBSC Certified bats are all required to be used in European Fastpitch Softball competitions.

ASA Only Certified Bats
ASA Only

The ASA bat certification, now recognized as the USA Softball certification, is the official performance standard for bats used in ASA/USA Softball sanctioned play.

Bats with the ASA or USA Softball stamp are tested to ensure that batted balls do not exceed 98 mph, helping maintain a balance between performance and player safety. This standard reduces the trampoline effect found in high-performance bats, making the game safer and more consistent.

Key details:

  • Meet the 98 mph batted-ball speed standard, and NOT the 1.20 BPF standard
  • Approved for use in most amateur, youth, and high school softball leagues..

Check your leagues regulation if the usage of the ASA Only bats are legal.

Slowpitch Softball Bat Certifications

USA (ASA) Certified Bats
USA (ASA) Slowpitch Certification

The USA (formerly ASA) Slowpitch bat certification is the official standard used by USA Softball to regulate bat performance in slowpitch softball leagues.

Bats with this certification are tested to ensure that batted-ball speeds do not exceed 98 mph, keeping the game fair and safe for all players. The standard limits the trampoline effect of the bat, making performance more consistent across different bat materials.

Key details:

  • Certified bats display the “USA Softball” or “ASA Certified” stamp on the barrel.
  • Approved for use in Softball slowpitch leagues and tournaments.
  • Designed for safety, durability, and balanced performance on the field.

USA (ASA) Slowpitch bats are required by leagues such as 360 Slowpitch Europe and ESSC Championship Tournaments.

NSA Certified Bats
NSA (1.20 BPF) Slowpitch Certification

Bat Performance Factor for Slowpitch softball governed leagues. Bat Performance Factor (BPF) is simply the increase in the liveliness of a ball hitting a bat compared to throwing a ball against a solid wall. For example a 20% faster rebound = a BPF of 1.20.

Key details:

  • Commonly used in adult recreational and tournament-level slowpitch leagues.
  • Designed for non-restricted, high-performance play under NSA rules.

Check your leagues regulation if the NSA (1.20 BPF) Slowpitch bats are legal.

USSSA Thumbprint Certified Bats
USSSA (Thumbprint or 220 lb Compression):

Bat Performance Factor for Slowpitch softball governed leagues. Bat Performance Factor (BPF) is simply the increase in the liveliness of a ball hitting a bat compared to throwing a ball against a solid wall. For example a 20% faster rebound = a BPF of 1.20.

As of September 1st, 2020 bat manufacturers can no longer make USSSA bats to this Standard. They must meet their new 240 NTS Standard. 220 lb Bats have more pop than 240 lb compression bats.

Bats with this stamp are NOT permitted to be used in European Leagues.

USSSA NTS Certified Bats
USSSA (240 lb Compression):

The USSSA 240 lbs Compression bat certification is the current performance standard used for USSSA Slowpitch Softball bats. It replaced the older 220 lbs compression standard beginning in 2021 to improve safety, durability, and fair play.

This standard requires that all approved bats maintain a minimum barrel compression of 240 pounds, meaning the bat has less flex and less pop compared to older models. This helps create a more balanced level of performance across all players.

Key details:

  • Must meet the 1.20 BPF and 240 lbs compression requirements.
  • Older 220 lbs compression bats are no longer legal in new competition play.
  • Permitted by the 360 Softball League since the 2024 season.

Check your leagues regulation if the USSSA Slowpitch bats are legal.
