Do you want to buy a new softball bat but don't know what to look for when searching? No worries, we've got you covered! This guide will help you learn more about the features of a slowpitch softball bat and a fastpitch softball bat like the correct lenght, materials or drop.
Fastpitch vs. Slowpitch Bats
The first thing to know is the difference between fastpitch and slowpitch softball bats.
- Fastpitch bats are lighter, with thinner barrels and usually measure between 28–34 inches. They are designed for high-speed pitching, and are mostly used in women’s and youth softball.
- Slowpitch bats are heavier, often with larger barrels (34 inches standard) and are made for powerful swings against slower pitches.
Make sure you choose the right type for your league and playing style.
League Certifications: What’s Required?
Most leagues require your bat to have a certification stamp to be legal for play. In WBSC Europe competitions, bats must meet official regulations and be approved for use.
Common stamps to look for:
- WBSC Approved
- USA Softball
- USSSA
- NSA
- ISA
If your bat doesn’t have the correct certification logo, you can only use it for training — not for official games.
Finding the Right Bat Length
Using the correct bat length helps with comfort, control, and power. Here are 3 quick ways to check if the length is right:
- Place the knob of the bat at the center of your chest and point the barrel outward — if you can touch the end with your fingertips, it fits.
- Place the bat upright next to your leg — it should reach your mid-hip.
- Hold the bat across your chest and reach for the barrel — if you can grab it, the length is suitable.
You can also use a bat size chart based on height and weight to help choose.

What Is Bat Drop?
Bat drop is the difference between the length and weight of the bat. A bat that is 30 inches long and weighs 20 ounces has a -10 drop.
- A higher drop (-12 or -13) means the bat is lighter — ideal for younger or smaller players.
- A lower drop (-8 or -9) is heavier — better for stronger or more advanced players.
Tip: Hold the bat straight out for 30 seconds. If the barrel drops quickly, the bat may be too heavy.
Bat Materials: Alloy vs Composite
Softball bats come in different materials. Each one feels and performs differently:
- Alloy (Aluminum): Durable, affordable, no break-in required. Great for beginners.
- Composite: Better pop, reduced vibration, needs a break-in period. Best for experienced players.
- Hybrid: Combination of alloy and composite. Balanced performance and feel.
Barrel Size and Handle Style
- Most fastpitch bats have a 2 ¼” barrel, while slowpitch bats may go up to 2 ⅝”.
- A larger barrel gives a bigger sweet spot.
- Thinner handles allow faster swings. Some bats also offer grip tapering or ergonomic knobs for better comfort.
