Softball Outfield Gloves: Buying Tips

Find the perfect fit, webbing, and size for your softball position.

Wilson softball outfield gloves
Do you need a new softball glove because your old one is worn out? Or have you recently switched from infield to outfield? Choosing the right glove can improve your defense and boost your team's chances of winning. Whether you're shopping for a slowpitch softball glove or a fastpitch softball glove, it’s important to know what features to look for. This guide will explain the key differences and help you choose the best outfield glove for your game.

A softball glove is one of the most important pieces of gear for any player. But not all gloves are the same. The right glove should match your position and fit your playing style. A well-chosen glove can increase comfort, improve control, and make it easier to catch tough balls. If you play in the outfield, you’ll spend most of your time chasing and catching fly balls. To do this effectively, focus on a few important glove features: pocket depth, glove size, material, and web design. Each of these factors plays a role in how well you can perform on the field.

Let’s explore these glove features in more detail.

Pocket Depth
A deep pocket gives you a more secure feeling when catching a fly ball. It helps the ball stay inside the glove and reduces the chance of it popping out. This is important for outfielders who often catch high, fast-moving balls. A deeper pocket allows for better control and makes it easier to hold onto the ball after the catch.

Web Design
Outfield gloves usually have either an open web or a closed web. An open web gives you better visibility when tracking fly balls through the air, which can be helpful under bright lights or sunlight. A closed web offers more support and helps some players catch and hold onto the larger softball more easily. The choice depends on your personal preference and playing style.

Level Type Position Glove Size
Youth Fastpitch Infield 10,5″ to 11″
Youth Fastpitch Outfield 11″ to 11,5″
Adult Fastpitch Infield 11,5″ to 12″
Adult Fastpitch Outfield / 1st Base 12″ to 13″
Adult Slowpitch Infield 12″ to 13″
Adult Slowpitch Outfield 12,5″ to 14″

Glove Sizing

Softball gloves are generally larger than baseball gloves. Each position also requires a different size. Outfielders use the largest gloves on the field, usually ranging from 12 to 13 inches in length (measured from the heel to the tip of the glove). A larger glove gives more reach and helps players catch fly balls more easily.

For youth outfielders, glove sizes typically range between 12 and 12.5 inches. Players aged 13 and older often use gloves sized between 12.5 and 13 inches. Adult outfielders usually prefer gloves that are 13 to 14 inches long, depending on hand size and personal comfort.

It's important that your glove feels like a natural extension of your hand, not something that gets in the way. You should always be able to control the glove and the ball. Many softball gloves include an adjustable Velcro strap, which helps you find the right fit for your hand.

Note: Most softball gloves have smaller hand openings, designed for slimmer hands – often a better fit for female players.

Glove Material
When choosing a softball glove, the material plays an important role in durability, comfort, and price. Players can choose from different types of leather, including synthetic, cowhide, pigskin, full-grain, and steerhide.
  • Cowhide and pigskin gloves are usually more affordable and good for beginner or casual players.
  • Full-grain and steerhide leather are stronger and last much longer. These materials are often used in premium or pro-level softball gloves.
While high-quality leather costs more, it offers better performance over time. Still, the final choice depends on your personal budget and preferences. What matters most is that the glove feels comfortable and supports your playing style.

Glove Accessories & Maintenance
To get the most out of your glove, regular maintenance is essential. A well-cared-for glove can last many seasons and perform better on the field.

Start with glove break-in tools to shape the glove correctly. Once it’s broken in, you can use glove oil, gel, or conditioner to treat and protect the leather. This keeps the glove soft, flexible, and crack-free. If a lace breaks, don’t worry – you can fix it yourself using a relacing kit. Keeping your glove in top shape helps maintain its structure and performance.

Tip: Never underestimate glove care. A few simple steps can extend the life of your softball glove and keep it game-ready.
