Buying Turf Shoes for Baseball or Softball: What to Look For

Understand the key features that make a difference when selecting turf shoes for training or games.

Turf baseball softball field shoes
The right turf shoes for baseball, slowpitch, or fastpitch softball are essential if you want good grip and want to avoid slipping during training. But should you choose low-top or high-top shoes? This guide will help you make the right choice when looking for a new pair of turf shoes.

Wearing the right shoes can help you perform at your best during every practice. While molded or metal cleats are great for game day, they are not ideal for training on artificial turf.

That’s where turf cleats come in. These shoes are made for both baseball and softball, but instead of spikes, they have a rubber nub or tread pattern on the sole. This gives them a more sneaker-like appearance and a comfortable fit. Turf cleats offer better grip and traction on artificial surfaces, making them the best option for training or playing on turf fields.

Why Choose Turf Cleats?
There are three main reasons why turf cleats are the best choice when training on artificial turf:
  • Better traction on turf surfaces
  • Helps protect the field from damage
  • Improves player safety

Field Protection
Rule number one: Never wear metal cleats on artificial turf. Metal spikes are designed to dig into natural grass, but on turf, they can cause serious damage, making the field unsafe or unusable in the future. Artificial turf is shallower than grass, and it can’t absorb the pressure from metal cleats in the same way.

Traction and Performance
Turf cleats use shorter rubber nubs or a tread pattern instead of spikes. This design provides excellent grip without needing to dig deep into the ground. It makes turf cleats the perfect option for training and playing on artificial surfaces.

Injury Prevention
Turf cleats help improve stability and control, especially when stopping, turning, or sprinting. This can help reduce the risk of slips, twisted ankles, and other common training injuries.

What Are Turf Trainers?
Another option is turf trainers. These are similar to turf cleats but have a less aggressive tread pattern. They’re often more comfortable and ideal for off-field practice, batting cages, warmups, or light training sessions. Many coaches and staff also wear turf trainers for their comfort and everyday use.

How to Choose the Right Turf Shoes
Before buying turf cleats or trainers, consider the following:
  • Fit
Like any baseball or softball shoe, your turf cleats should fit snugly but not too tight. Make sure there’s a little room at the toe to prevent blisters or discomfort. Think of fitting them the same way you’d fit a comfortable running shoe or sneaker.
Tip: Try them on with your regular practice socks to get the most accurate fit.
  • Height
Most turf shoes have a low-top design, which offers better movement and flexibility. However, they provide less ankle support. If you need more stability, consider a mid-top turf cleat that gives extra protection around the ankle.
