5 Must-Know Baseball Buying Tips for Players and Coaches

From cover to core – understand what makes a baseball game-ready, safe, and league-approved.

Baseball balls

At first glance, a baseball might look simple. But to players who throw, catch, and hit it, every detail matters — especially the 108 stitches holding it together. From the outer cover to the inner core, every part of a baseball affects how it performs on the field.

Let’s break down the most important things to know before buying a baseball, whether it’s for training, games, or youth leagues.

1. Cover Material: Leather vs. Synthetic

When choosing a baseball, the cover material is the first thing to consider. You’ll typically find two types:

  • Genuine Leather:

Offers a better grip, more durability, and consistent performance. Most game balls are made with leather.

  • Synthetic (Vinyl):

Easier on the budget and more resistant to dirt. Often used for practice or recreational play. Maintains its white color longer but has slightly less feel.

2. Stitching Styles: Raised, Rolled, Flat

The stitches (or seams) affect grip, control, and how the ball flies through the air.

  • Raised Seam:

Stitches stick out more. Easier to grip and control. Ideal for beginners, training, or casual play.

  • Rolled Seam:

Sits lower than raised seams. Offers a balance between grip and aerodynamics. Common in Little League, high school, and pro games.

  • Flat Seam:

Seam is nearly flush with the ball. Harder to grip but ideal for pitching machines. Allows a straighter, more consistent flight path.

3. What’s Inside the Baseball: Core & Windings
The core (or “heart”) is usually made of rubber, cork, or a rubber-cork mix. Different leagues use different core types to meet their standards.

Surrounding the core are layers of wool yarn or blend windings, which help:
  • Maintain the ball’s shape
  • Improve compression and bounce
  • Extend the lifespan
Standard competition baseballs:
  • Circumference: 9 – 9.25 inches
  • Weight: 5 – 5.25 ounces (~143 grams)
You can check the league approval (like MLB, Little League, NFHS) on the stamp printed on the ball.

4. R.I.F. Baseballs for Youth Safety
For younger players, safety comes first. Reduced Injury Factor (R.I.F.) baseballs are designed to be softer and reduce fear of getting hit.
  • Made with a polyurethane core
  • Softer than cork or rubber
  • Available in official size and weight or lightweight versions
These balls mimic the feel and performance of a real baseball but offer extra safety for kids.

5. Always Check League Requirements
Before buying, check with your coach or league. Each level or organization may have specific rules about:
  • Ball size and weight
  • Seam type
  • Cover material
  • Approved core compression
Buying the wrong type of baseball can mean it’s not allowed for game use. Understanding the construction and materials of a baseball helps you choose the right one for your needs—whether it’s training, official games, or youth development. The better your ball, the better your performance (and confidence) on the field.
