Types and Materials
There are three different types of baseball and softball cleats: metal cleats, moulded cleats (plastic studs), and turf shoes (artificial grass shoes). Turf cleats and moulded baseball shoes have rubber or plastic studs. Baseball cleats are made of metal. Most baseball sneakers are made of leather or genuine leather.
Construction
There are low, mid, and high-cut baseball shoe models. For a baseball pitcher, it doesn't matter whether they wear high or low shoes, as it has no effect on the game. Low and mid cleats are very efficient when speed is important. If you want more ankle stability, the high model is the best choice because high-top baseball cleats provide better grip. High shoes with metal cleats are recommended for catchers because they are very stable and offer excellent grip. Turf shoes are often worn during training. These shoes also provide good grip and stability. Baseball turf shoes are available in low and mid-top models. Pitcher shoes require additional protection because the front of the shoe often digs into the ground.
History
In 1860, baseball players began using cleats. Cleats were developed because baseball players had very little grip during play. The first baseball player to use spikes on baseball shoes was Paul Butler. The first shoes were made of leather, but many players found them uncomfortable.
Use of Cleats (Studs)
Rubber and plastic cleats are used in youth baseball and softball. Metal cleats are prohibited in youth leagues because they can cause injuries. Metal cleats are used at higher levels of baseball and softball. They provide better traction on wet, soft, and muddy ground as they dig into the grass. More and more players in MLB use plastic studs due to their lighter weight. Rubber cleats are often used on dry ground.
Training Shoes
Training baseball shoes can be used for both training and games. Baseball shoes for training are often cheaper than game shoes, as players usually prefer better shoes for games.
Brands
Baseball/softball shoes must provide good stability. Shoes known for their stability include New Balance baseball shoes, Nike baseball shoes, Under Armour baseball shoes, Adidas baseball shoes, Nike baseball cleats, and so on. There are also Reebok shoes and Rawlings baseball shoes. Metal spikes are not used on artificial grass; players typically use plastic spikes on artificial grass.
Age, Gender & Size
Sizes US 3.5 to 6.5 are for children. Sizes 6 to 12 are for adults. Baseball/softball shoes for men are generally wider and longer than those for women, as men often have broader feet. There are also differences in the color combinations between men's and women's shoes.
Prices
The price of baseball and softball shoes can vary from 30 to 200 euros. Baseball shoes with metal studs are often more expensive than those with moulded studs. The price also often depends on the shoe size: the larger the shoe size, the more expensive the shoe. Shoes made of synthetic leather are cheaper than those made of genuine leather, because genuine leather is more durable.
